Debating

With the aim of establishing a debating culture that enhances mutual understanding in the society, ESU Turkey has been supporting debate activities by organising trainings, conferences, competitions and tournaments with our network schools and universities. With that vision we have been offering the following programs:

  • ESU Turkey Debate Academy: A five day intensive program aiming to equip the participants with relevant debate techniques and competencies. The training is offered by university level international debate mentors with excellent track record in World School Debate Championships. Past mentors includes leading figures from ivy league universities in US, Oxbridge clubs in UK, and most prominent institutions from the continental Europe. The Academy also includes various lectures and electives on specific topics. These lectures and electives are offered by leading names in Turkish academic and business milieu. The academy is organised twice ever year, one in end January, and other mid-June. Each time the Academy has been hosted by leading schools and universities in Istanbul (Kadir Has University, Hisar Schools, FMV Ayazağa Işık High School, etc). For further information and testimonials please refer the past academy brochures listed below.

  • ESU Turkey Schools Debate League: Leading high schools in town joins this tournament. In its inaugural year the league started with only three schools, following year the number of participating schools have risen to seven, and in 2015 the number was fifteen. The league is organised within January and February, and a the final match takes place at British Consulate General – Pera House each year in mid-May. To join this year’s league please contact ESU Turkey.

  • ESU Turkey Debate Conference: This one day event is organised at the last Saturday of October. Various one-hour short workshops and lectures on debate are offered by leading speakers. Each year we host a few international prominence speakers at well. The end of the day and the following Sunday is dedicated for the selection of the Team Turkey that will represent ESU Turkey at WSDC. The selection process is handled by the coach of Team Turkey, and a short list of ten to twelve students are elected to form the Team Turkey. The selection of the A and B teams happens during the following spring. The Debate Conference has traditionally been hosted by Açı Schools. In October 2015, an inaugural Debate Conference in İzmir has been hosted by TAKEV.
In addition to these programs, ESU Turkey also supports various other debate initiates. Among others, since 2011, ESU Turkey is to be a proud supporter and sponsor of Eurasia Schools Debating Competition organised by Robert College Debate Society.

Please do contact us if you need any help to establish a debate club or in need of organising some friendly matches with other fellow schools. Our team and volunteers will be more than happy to support you…
